What is an ADHD Specialist?

An ADHD specialist is a medical specialist who:

  1. Possesses ‘advanced’ or specialised training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD and related neurodevelopmental , medical and mental health disorders.
  2. Is a medical specialist whose medical practice and experience demonstrates an ‘exclusive’ primary focus towards the practice of treating ADHD as compared to ‘general’ medical and psychiatric disorder.
  3. A medical specialist who holds general and specialist post graduate fellowship qualifications from accredited Australian Royal College or equivalent.
  4. Has a special ‘interest’ in the study and application of the modern science in ADHD and evidence of ongoing involvement in continuing professional development and affililiation with recognized ADHD institutions of excellence.
  5. Has extensive ‘experience’ in the application of current best practice guidelines and scientific evidence of ADHD and related disorders in clinical practice.
  6. Has contributed towards learning , supervising , teaching and developing of advanced skills in ADHD and related disorders at a national and or international level.
  7. Proficient in application of the principles of the modern science towards formulating the uniqueness and novelty of ADHD and related disorders in a “non generic” manner.
  8. Has suitable experience of disseminating psychoeducation to families, carers, stakeholders and institutions of patients with ADHD and related disorders.
  9. Practice demonstrates proficient understanding of various social economic variables , psychological Impact , role of family dynamics , burden of care assessment and interventions of the carers, families, parents and partners of patients with ADHD and related disorders.
  1. Possesses advanced knowledge of current evidence based guidelines and pharmacological principles related to the biological treatments of ADHD and co-morbid disorders.
  2. Possesses advanced knowledge of current evidence base guidelines, indications and outcomes of various non- pharmacological treatments of ADHD and related disorders (diet, exercise, psychotherapies, ADHD coaching etc).
  3. Possesses the skills , educations and experience in interpreting , applying and applying outcomes of essential Neurocognitive tests in completing the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and related disorders.
  4. Applied expert skills in the application and understanding of essential legal, criminal, and ethical issues that are prevalent in ADHD individuals.
  5. Has tertiary specialist skills in assessing for not just ‘what appears to be’ ADHD, what ‘actually is’ ADHD and ‘what is not’ ADHD.
  6. Advocates for, educates and demonstrates awareness of the complex issues faced by ADHD patients due to stigma, taboo, media community stereotypes and media sensationalism.
  7. Has Tertiary specialist skills in assessing for not just ‘what appears to be’ ADHD, what ‘actually is’ ADHD and ‘what is not’ ADHD.
  8. Applied principles of a ‘shared care approach’ towards specific aspects of ADHD. Demonstrates what ‘needs’ to be treated or does ‘not’ need-to be treated. Treatment is driven not only by the presence of diagnosis, rather also by the subjective the needs of the patient with ADHD and related disorders.
